With the announcement of a tour or new recording, this mailing list can generate many messages during the day. If you prefer, you can subscribe to the digest, which lets you receive the traffic bundled into one message with a table of contents. To subscribe to the digest, please send mail to majordomo@conchas.nm.org with this as the body of the message: unsubscribe shot-of-rhythm subscribe shot-of-rhythm-digest Chip Rosenthal maintains a web site that has lots of interesting Hiatt information on it: http://www.unicom.com/john-hiatt Jay Hipps also has some pages: http://www.community.net/~jhipps/hiatt.html Please wander around these web sites to find lots of history, some pictures and just general cool stuff. This file, sent to all new subscribers of the regular and digest versions of Shot-of-Rhythm, is available at any time by sending the command "info shot-of-rhythm" to majordomo@conchas.nm.org. PLEASE SAVE THIS FILE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are three addresses you will want to remember: 1. shot-of-rhythm@conchas.nm.org Send all postings here. They will be forwarded immediately to all shot-of-rhythm subscribers. 2. majordomo@conchas.nm.org Send all subscription, info and help requests here. 3. shot-of-rhythm-owner@conchas.nm.org This is the list manager's address. If you have questions or problems, you can reach the list administrator du jour at this address. If you feel more comfortable with a "real person's" address, then send your mail to vsmith@technet.nm.org -- Victoria Smith. That's me and I am usually doing the day to day list administration. SHOT-OF-RHYTHM OPTIONS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are two versions of Shot-of-Rhythm: 1. The Discussion List (Shot-of-Rhythm) Subscribers to this list receive individual messages from other subscribers as soon as each one is posted. 2. The Discussion Digest (Shot-of-Rhythm-Digest) Subscribers receive a digest when about 20Kb of messages are received by the regular list. A digest will be sent every day if there are any posts but more often if a lot of posts come through. You may subscribe to either format, or both. Neither of these lists are edited. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE REGULAR DISCUSSION (NON-DIGEST) LIST ONLY: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send e-mail to majordomo@conchas.nm.org with this in the message body: unsubscribe shot-of-rhythm TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE DIGEST LIST ONLY: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send e-mail to majordomo@conchas.nm.org with this in the message body: unsubscribe shot-of-rhythm-digest TO CHANGE FROM THE REGULAR LIST TO THE DIGEST LIST: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send e-mail to majordomo@conchas.nm.org with this in the message body: unsubscribe shot-of-rhythm subscribe shot-of-rhythm-digest If you're confused by any of the above, send e-mail to the list manager at shot-of-rhythm-owner@conchas.nm.org, or send the command help to majordomo@conchas.nm.org POSTING TO SHOT-OF-RHYTHM (the rules of the game) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shot-of-Rhythm is devoted to discussions of the music of John Hiatt, be it recorded by him or other artists. Due to the good taste of Hiatt fans, we also talk about other artists, some who haven't even recorded JH material. We figure anybody who's into Hiatt probably had to do some digging to get there, and is likely to have unearthed some other gems on the way. If you want to send a message to shot-of-rhythm, please observe the following guidelines: 1. All messages must be related to John's work, at least tangentially. Sometimes the discussion gets *extremely* tangential, discussing other musicians and places. We are an electronic community sharing a common interest, but try to stick with appropriate topics which somehow relate to our focus. 2. The sorts of messages that are NOT welcome under any circumstances are action alerts, chain letters and ponzi schemes (MAKE.MONEY.FAST), urban legends, and other unrelated topics no matter how well-intentioned they might seem (Dying Boy Wants Postcards). If you question whether or not your post is one of these, then send it to shot-of-rhythm-approval@conchas.nm.org and ask. 3. Please respect copyright and other intellectual property rights of John and others. 4. SOR is provided for your personal use. SOR members should be able to discuss topics freely, without fear of their words coming back to haunt them. You may not duplicate or redistribute SOR messages in any other forum or manner without the permission of the message author. 5. This list is intended for adults, and members may freely discuss whatever issues they wish (within the boundary of the list's charter) in whatever fashion they choose. Nonetheless, gratuitous profanity and personal attacks are unwelcome and should be avoided. 6. Please do not send attachments such as pictures, sound clips or other binary files to the list. This causes major headaches for some subscribers, as well as kicking off a digest with gibberish in it. If you have something we'd be interested in, then post a message and tell us about it. We can make a temporary ftp site available for those who are interested in receiving a specialized file. 7. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Those are the hard and fast rules. After growing pains and much discussion on the list, here are some other thoughts: 1. Please use private e-mail when your messages are directed to a particular person, rather than posting to the whole list. Check the To: and Cc: addresses to verify that you are not sending private mail to the list address. Consider whether your post will be of interest to the whole list, or just to one person. 2. As a subscriber, you can receive a list of who is on SOR by sending the who command to majordomo@conchas.nm.org. If you need to reach someone on the list check for their address here rather than posting a "personal message" to the whole list. 3. You might want to lurk for a little while and check out the web sites before you post. Once you feel comfortable on the list, by all means send an introduction so the list members know you're out there, who you are, what you like, etc. etc. You might also include your story of how you first heard John Hiatt. 4. If you feel a thread is going on too long or has gotten too far removed from the purpose of the list, then introduce your own on-topic discussion! TIDBITS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are a digest subscriber you will see the letters HDHDBOW at the bottom of every digest. You will also see these letters as well as references to a hoedown in some of the postings. Here is the story behind that: To: Shot Of Rhythm List Subject: Misheard Lyrics Today's SOR Digest was pretty slim, so I thought I'd tell a little story. When I first bought Slow Turning back in '88, it was in heavy rotation in my Walkman for weeks before I got a chance to sit down and "study" the lyric sheet. I had to laugh out loud when I discovered that the words that I had been singing to "Georgia Rae" in no way resembled what John was actually saying. Somehow "Before the whole damn thing unwinds" was translated by my brain as "Ho dee hoedown bang on wine". I always thought that was a strange line, but figured, well, this is the guy who rhymed amoeba with Queen of Sheba. Anyone else have examples of misheard lyrics? I know I can't be the only one -- John's diction isn't exactly precise (and we like it like that!). Rave on... Lora Lora L. Melby dpmelby@piper.hamline.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E-MAIL ISN'T PERFECT (Technical difficulties may arise) The Internet is incredibly complex, and messages are sometimes delayed or lost for no apparent reason. If your posting does not appear on the list within a day or two while other traffic does, you may want to resend yours. To make things easier for the list administrator, please take note of these things: 1. If you are away from your e-mail account for an extended period of time, please make sure your mailbox will not become full. You may want to unsubscribe from the list until your return. If you give the list administrator advance notice, we can save the digests for you and provide them to you on your return. 2. If you are losing your e-mail access, please unsubscribe! 3. Sometimes a list member's faulty e-mail account returns an error to you. If this happens, don't re-post unless you are sure your posting didn't make it to the list. Most errors will bounce to the list administrator, but .... 4. The majordomo software tries to filter out administrative type messages. If you put the words subscribe or unsubscribe in your post, chances are it will bounce to the administrator and _not_ be posted to the list at large. LIST MANAGER -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Shot-of-Rhythm list administrator is Victoria Smith. You can reach her at vsmith@technet.nm.org. Please write to me with your comments, suggestions, and questions about the list or your subscription. The list manager has no official relationship with John Hiatt, his management, his record company, etc. She's just a fan. The Shot-of-Rhythm list wishes to thank Mark Ferguson for content and formatting ideas; Chip Rosenthal and Jay Hipps for content as well as for being the list's founding fathers; Lora Melby for giving us Hoe Dee Hoedown; all the subscribers; and especially Mr. Hiatt for giving us the music.
