Slow Turning (LP)

The success of John Hiatt's Bring the Family must have surprised him and his record company. Not that it was successful, I mean, but that it was so much so. This time around, it seems as if John Hiatt had a much better idea about what he wanted to do, and Slow Turning is as good, if not better, as its predecessor.
Slow Turning is a slow turning to a more, dare I say, country flavor of some of Hiatt's earliest releases. Songs such as ``Drive South'' and ``Georgia Rae'' fit somewhere between the country and rock slots that Hiatt invariably has been pegged into since Hanging Around the Observatory and Overcoats. But then there are songs like ``Tennessee Plates,'' which ain't about dishes, that just kick out the jams. And when there are jams to be kicked out, John Hiatt's definitely wearing the boots. Check ``Slow Turning,'' too, for great lines like ``I'm yellin' at the kids in the back seat/'Cause they're bangin' like Charlie Watts.'' This record's a certified winner. If John Hiatt can keep this kind of pace up, there's no telling what'll happen to rock/country/soul/R&B music.
