Assignments: On-Line Participation

A portion of your final grade (5%) is based on your ongoing participation in our class newsgroup, utexas.class.lis341-cr. These guidelines explain my expectations for your participation.

• Read the newsgroup regularly for news and information. When I post a message to the group, I shall assume you have viewed it within 72 hours (3 days) of posting.

• Post a facilitative message to the newsgroup once every two weeks, at a minimum. A facilitative posting is one that offers some insightful observation and invites ongoing discussion.

• Ongoing participation is expected. One posting every week or two is not the same thing as ten postings in the final week.

• When I say "invite ongoing discussion," that does not mean writing, "What do you think?" at the end of every article. It means investing the effort to ensure your postings are interesting and raise points worth considering.

• Facilitative postings generally fall into three categories:
  • discussion of some event, trend, or technology.
  • critical review of a net-based resource.
  • a followup that furthers the discussion.

• Our newsgroup is chartered for discussion relating to LIS 341 and the Internet. Please keep your postings on topic. A message discussing how the presidential candidates are using the net in their campaign is appropriate. A message discussing your favorite candidate is not.

• Ensure that your registered email address appears in your posting header -- if not in the From: then in a Reply-To: header. If the address is incorrect, then you will not be credited correctly for the posting. If you are using the tin newsreader, you may want to tailor your envionment to add the Reply-To: header automatically.

• Please observe good netiquette.

• Please do not ...
  • post test mesages in the class newsgroup.
  • post HTML or other richtext formats.
  • post binaries or attachments.
  • make U.M.P.s (Uninspired Mandatory Postings) just to obtain credit (you won't).
  • make lame postings.
