Exercise 1. You've received the following message in your emailbox:
To: larry@mail.utexas.edu, moe@mail.utexas.edu Cc: curly@mail.utexas.edu, shemp@mail.utexas.edu Subject: next week's pie eating contest From: mary@mail.utexas.edu Sender: shelly@mail.utexas.edu Which of you stooges forgot to order the pies?
Answer the following questions about that message. For the first four questions, list the names (you may omit the domains) of all the email recipients.
Exercise 2. I received the following email message:
To: gummo@aol.com Cc: chipr@gslis.utexas.edu From: harpo@compuserve.net Subject: Re: I shot an elephant in my pajamas honk honk honk *honk*
Most email programs support five commands: compose, reply, group-reply, forward and bounce. For each of the following situations, indicate which command would be the best choice.
Exercise 3. Post a message to the class newsgroup that reviews a web site that you like or visit frequently. Summarize what the web site is about. Explain why you think it is useful or entertaining or whatever it is that makes you like it. Your posting need not be (and should not be) more than a paragraph or two, but to get full credit it should allow the reader to determine whether or not it is a web site they might want to visit. To obtain full credit, the subject of your posting must begin with: HW3 Review.
Exercise 4. Find and subscribe to three active Usenet newsgroups in the Big 8 or alt.* hierarchies. Do not choose all three from the same hierarchy. You may find the listings posted periodically to news.groups helpful.
Read and follow these groups. Unless you are already familiar with Usenet netiquette, do not post. Just lurk on the groups to get a feel for how Usenet works. You will need to follow the groups regularly, checking in every few days. We will return to them in a future assignment.
Roamwork Exercise. The following questions send you out to the net to locate some information.
