Exercise 1. In homework three you were instructed to subscribe to three Usenet newsgroups. Choose one of those three newsgroups, and post a review of it to the class newsgroup. Use a subject such as HW4 review: comp.unix.questions on your posting.
Your posting need not be more than a few paragraphs. Your posting should be descriptive and helpful if you wish to receive full credit. Summarize what the group is about. Describe the sort of discussion and interaction that occur there. Describe who may find the group useful or interesting. Provide any appropriate caveats regarding the group content or dynamics.
This posting does not count towards your on-line participation grade.
Exercise 2. Find an Internet mailing list on a topic that interests you. Subscribe to it. Read and follow the list. A future homework assignment will ask you some questions about the list.
You must select an active list that receives at least ten messages a week. Select a list that allows discussion, not an annoucements-only list. Do not select a list hosted at UT. Do not use a web-based form to subscribe.
Do not post to the list. Just spend the next week or two lurking, to get a feel for the list, its membership, and mailing list netiquette.
Exercise 3. The "UT Austin Windows NT Special Interest Group" has a mailing list on the UT Computer Center's list server.
You are going to have to do a bit of exploring to solve this exercise. You probably will need to use both web and email to find the answer. I recommend www.utexas.edu as a starting point.
Note that you have not been instructed to actually join this list. Don't bother them unless you truly want to be a member.
Roamwork Exercise. The following questions send you out to the net to locate some information.
