Homework Five
Exercise 1. In homework four
you were instructed to subscribe to an Internet mailing list. This
exercise that mailing list.
- Question 1.1. What is the name of the mailing
list to which you subscribed?
- Question 1.2. What is the submission address
for the list?
- Question 1.3. Are you receiving messages in a
digest or reflector format?
- Question 1.4. Is the list moderated or unmoderated?
- Question 1.5. If you wanted to unsubscribe from
the list, where would you email and what would you say?
Exercise 2. For each of the following software packages,
indicate the current version number, license status (freeware,
shareware, or commercial), and a URL that may be used to download
the package.
- Question 2.1. WS-FTP LE for Windows 95, an
ftp client.
- Question 2.2. Eudora Light for Mac, an
email client.
- Question 2.3. WinZip for Windows/3.1, a
file compression and archiving utility.
Exercise 3. The diagram below shows a server filesystem, with
several files and directories. The current directory is marked on the
diagram. Answer the following questions about the filesystem:
- Question 3.1(a). What is the full pathname to
the index.html file?
- Question 3.1(b). What is the relative pathname to
the index.html file?
- Question 3.1(c). What kind of information probably
is contained in the index.html file?
- Question 3.1(d). If FTP is used to retrieve this
file, which transfer mode should be selected?
- Question 3.2(a). What is the full pathname to
the dino.jpeg file?
- Question 3.2(b). What is the relative pathname to
the dino.jpeg file?
- Question 3.2(c). What kind of information probably
is contained in the dino.jpeg file?
- Question 3.2(d). If FTP is used to retrieve this
file, which transfer mode should be selected?
- Question 3.3(a). What is the full pathname to
the yabba.au file?
- Question 3.3(b). What is the relative pathname to
the yabba.au file?
- Question 3.3(c). What kind of information probably
is contained in the yabba.au file?
- Question 3.3(d). If FTP is used to retrieve this
file, which transfer mode should be selected?
Exercise 4. Write a web page. It must:
- Be composed with a text editor, such as Windows Notepad or
Mac Simple Edit.
- Conform to the HTML 3.2 standard. Use an HTML validator to ensure
your web page is free from errors.
- Include the following HTML elements:
- at least one heading.
- at least two paragraphs of text.
- at least one list (of any form).
- at least three hyperlinks.
- at least two images.
- signed and dated, with contact email address listed.
- Not include advanced elements (such as
frames, tables or Javascript).
- Be published on a publicly accessible web server.
As far as what's in the page, that's up to you. It
could be fun or serious. Whatever you come up with, it will be
your "class page." It will be linked to your name in the class roster. You need to keep this page running
and maintain it through the rest of the semester. You will be
coming back to it and adding some links to other work you do.
