Welcome to Briefing.

Michael "Max" Nofziger brings a record of integrity and leadership to the 1997 Austin, Texas mayor's race. Max served three terms as City Councilmember, and established himself as a popular and effective community leader. He was voted "Best Councilmember" in the Austin Chronicle Reader Poll every year they've asked.

Max is known throughout the city as a champion of the environment and the arts. Now he returns to the political arena to champion the cause of political reform. Max has pledged to run his campaign by strict contribution and expenditure limits.

This folder contains information on Max's background and his plans as Mayor.

Biography

No, he was not born in a log cabin. Yes, he really did sell flowers on the streets of South Austin. See Max's biography for the whole story.

Record

Some people offer promises. Max offers accomplishments. Through his years of service on the Austin City Council, Max has established a record on the issues.

Candidate
Questionnaires

When candidates appear before an interest group, they sometimes offer the moon and the sky to land a political endorsement. Not Max. His promises and accomplishments are a matter of record -- and he would like to share them with you. Check out his answers on some recent candidate questionnaires:

Cap Metro
Reform
Extra!

On April 9, Max released The Nofziger Plan to MAXimize Transit. Rather than another call for yet more audits or consultant studies, Max wanted a plan that would reform Capital Metro, get the troubled agency back on track, and relieve Austin's growing traffic congestion problems.

Stephen Bayer is former chairman of the Capital Metro board. Max and Steve teamed up back in 1987 -- and the results have not been duplicated since: increased bus ridership, decreased traffic load on key roadways (e.g. the Lamar Blvd. Bridge), elimination of bus fares while reducing the sales tax a quarter cent.

When Max wanted to develop a plan for Cap Metro reform, it was only natural he would turn to Steve once again. Many of Bayers's ideas were incorporated into the final plan.

The plan calls out four key points:

  • An elected Capital Metro board.
  • A sales tax rollback.
  • Free rides - again!
  • A cost-effective light rail system.

The bottom line is more riders, less traffic, and reduced taxes. That sounds like a winning combination to us!
